Staff Accountant II - Royalty Accounting

$64,100 to $75,400 per year

Compensation: $64,100.00 to $75,400.00 

Purpose: The Staff Accountant II performs landlord lease and sublease accounting processes, completing rent calculations, reconciliations, and compliance reporting while providing a high-level of customer support to landlords and subtenants.

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborates with Operations Controllers to ensure the accuracy of the financial books, partnering with Business Development and Legal to ensure compliance with contractual rent terms and lease agreements
  • Provides accounting assistance in the rent and subtenant departments within Corporate Accounting, including journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analysis
  • Supports lease reporting activities through data analysis, technology solutions, and interpretation of lease terms
  • Assists with creating and amending leases, verifying accuracy and integrity of sales mapping tables and rent calculation parameters
  • Responds to landlords and sublandlords, Development, Development Finance, Operations, and other stakeholders regarding rent-related inquiries, audits, and reporting requirements
  • Maintains strong working relationships with landlords and sublandlords to resolve rent-related matters, address disputes, and ensure timely resolution of issues

Reporting Relationship:The Staff Accountant II reports to the Senior Manager of Rent Accounting

Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Work Environment:

  • Education and Experience: The combination of education and professional experience must exceed 5 years:
    • In a technical role: Requires 5 years of experience engaged in delivering accounting programs; rent accounting experience strongly preferred
      • A bachelor’s degree in a program related to the functional area can count for 3 of the 5-year requirement
    • In the industry: 3+ years of hospitality, F&B and/or retail experience
  • Specialized Training:
    • Training that leads to strong knowledge of GAAP principles and their practical application
    • Knowledge of state and federal tax regulations and statutes
  • Specialized Skillset/Competencies/Traits:
    • Solid Excel skills including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and data analysis functions
    • Experience with PeopleSoft Financials and SAP a plus
    • Analytical skills to interpret financial data, identify root causes of variances, and develop solutions
    • High level of accuracy in work product with strong quality control mindset
    • Flexibility to adjust to changing priorities; ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines
    • Business acumen and also has the mindset required to understand the long-term implications of accounting to advance the organization’s goals
    • Demonstrated history of understanding the needs of the business, stakeholders, the employee population, and individual circumstances
    • Demonstrated history of creating and maintaining positive work environments
  • Location: This position is based at the North America Support Center in Bethesda, MD
